Stainless Steel maintenance

Stainless Steel Facts

All grades of stainless steel will stain and discolour due to surface deposits and can not be considered completely maintenance-free. Surface contamination and the formation of deposits must be prevented.

Ausswide offer mainenance services to prevent the build-up of such deposits.

A working environment which offers more aggressive conditions, e.g. hot & humid, such as in a swimming pool, increases the speed of discolouration and therefore requires maintenance on a more frequent basis.

Stainless steel requires a regular maintenance program to protect the chromium-oxide layer.

Washing removes contaminants, such as salt, dirt and dust that can cause corrosion and is necessary to avoid tea staining.

Rain washing the surface is helpful in reducing tea staining, so design the job to take advantage of the rain, but ensure good drainage. The stainless steel should also be washed when cleaning the surrounding area.

For best results wash with soap or mild detergent and warm water, followed by rinsing with clean cold water. The appearance of the surface can be further improved if the washed surface is wiped dry.

Stainless Steel Maintenance Program

  • Importance of post-fabrication treatments +

In order to retain maximum corrosion resistance and aesthetic appeal, the surface of stainless steel must be kept clean and protected. Provided the grade of stainless steel and the surface finish are correctly selected, and cleaning schedules carried out on a regular basis then good performance and long service life are assured. Auswide offer regular maintenance inspection to prolong life or your stainless steel products.
  • Importance of site management +

It is quite possible for everything to be done well in fabrication, only for the whole project to be spoiled by inappropriate practices on site. Auswide offers additional services of post fabrication treatment of stainless steel and protection.
  • Can steel treatment be applied to existing stainless steel? +

Yes it can. Our treatment can be done to new and existing stainless steel surfaces. When applied, it will prevent the surface from deteriorating and will make it much easier to maintain. In cases where the stainless steel is permanently stained, the applicator may be able to restore it back to a near new condition before treating.
  • How can I remove the corrosion/tea staining from my existing stainless steel? +

For those areas that have existing corrosion/tea staining such that is found on BBQ's that have been exposed to salt water, a restoration compound may be needed to restore the surface before the EnduroCleanTM pre-cleaner is used.
  • Does the area to be treated need to be masked? +

No, the product is not corrosive and will not harm fixtures, frames or fittings. In fact, it will render the surfaces water repellent for a period of time
  • How often should I clean the stainless steel once treatment has been applied? +

A quick clean is recommended every one to two weeks depending on the exposure of surface that the coating has been applied to. Frequency and cost of cleaning is lower with stainless steel than with any other materials and will often outweigh the initial higher cost of this superior product.
  • Can the coating be damaged? +

Yes. Be careful not to use any rough, gritty, highly acidic, alkaline or abrasive cleaners as they may damage the protective coating. Cleaners like this damage or polish back the actual substrate of the surface.
